SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL
In musical terms, a miniature is a brief self-contained piece of music. Creating these small square paintings reminded me of the pieces I played on piano during my childhood. Each explores a particular idea or form of expression.
In this series, I considered ideas within a balanced square. As an image shape, a square has neither a vertical nor horizontal pull. This makes it a perfect ratio for exploring a single design idea or colour palette from a more formal compositional point of view.
The paintings in this collection are both simplified and complex – with much of the depth, composition, colour, and brushwork of a larger piece, within their compact size… I like to call them pocket symphonies.
At just 6” x 6”, they invite you to lean in close, and be drawn into each little world.

These hand-crafted paintings are each based on a moment seen on one of my walks (my favourite way to get new ideas and gather material for the studio).
The pieces in this collection are painted with acrylic on lightly textured archival watercolour paper that is mounted to wood panel. They are carefully sealed and then protected with a gorgeous ultra-mat varnish.
Each miniature is elegantly framed in a contemporary blond wood floater frame that hangs flush to the wall with a concealed wire.
The overall effect is of beautifully crafted simplicity. Sure to bring joy for a lifetime!
