Each moment carries its own colour and character — whether brilliant or subdued, warm or cool — and that quality of light often becomes the unifying element that ties a painting together.
The Impressionists called it the "envelope" of light, and it remains central to everything that I do.
The paintings in this Poetry of Place Collection focus on creating a poetic interpretation of the landscape that surrounds my coastal studio here on the South Shore of Nova Scotia – and of the light that illuminates it.
I have kept the scenes intentionally simple so that they exude a quiet sense of harmony. I hope they bring you a sense of joyful calm, so needed in these turbulent times.

From my studio to your home…
Inspiration for this collection was gathered in the towns and coastal areas surrounding my studio on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada.
All original paintings in this collection are acrylic on canvas or cradled wood panel. Smaller pieces (6×6” to 11×14”) are framed and larger canvas works (20×20” to 20×30”) are gallery-depth with the sides painted a coordinating colour that looks harmonious and completes the artwork.
All pieces are ready-to-hang, and hang beautifully flush to the wall with a concealed wire.
Each painting in this collection was crafted by hand in my studio. All materials are archival quality and chosen to bring a lifetime of joy!

The Poetry of Place Collection is a series of more than thirty paintings created over the past year. They celebrate the harmonious beauty of Nova Scotia’s South Shore. I hope they bring a sense of joyful calm, so needed in these turbulent times.

Golden Hour (Rissers Beach, Nova Scotia). This painting shows the golden warmth of the late afternoon sun, just as it dips below the treeline. The gentle ocean waves were illuminated with bounce light from the sun and the sky overhead. Sunlight glowed behind the evergreens and filled the horizon with a warm yellow hue. A single beam of light illuminated a couple of people pausing for a chat.

Midnight Garden. This painting is based on a collage made up of my own photos from around Nova Scotia. This painting shows my own garden surrounding a house that sits in one of my favourite towns (Annapolis Royal). The warm porch light catches on various flowers and foliage and the sky is calm, restful, nighttime blue.

Walking Together. Brilliant late afternoon sunlight caught these two youths crossing the street in Halifax as they headed home at the end of the school day. Warm light glances off the pavement and bounces into the cooler blue and purple shadow areas.

Working Harbour. This painting is based on a collage of my own photographs taken around Nova Scotia. It’s largely inspired by Harbourville, a small working harbour along the Bay of Fundy. The yellow house with its trees and gardens, as well as the stormy late-day light are from the collage process.

Beach Fireworks (Broad Cove, Nova Scotia). Growing up in cities, I typically watched firework displays with neighbourhoods or skyline backdrops. Here, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, fireworks are often over a backdrop of beach and ocean. This painting shows the brilliant Canada Day fireworks over Broad Cove Beach. The brilliant glow of different colours of light were great fun to pain

Snowy Beach Path (Broad Cove, Nova Scotia). This painting shows the path to the beach on a muted overcast winter day. The water is icy blue and dried overwintering due grasses are a lovely range of warm tan colours. The whole scene evokes a sense of quiet contemplation. You can almost feel the clear ocean-scented winter air and hear the sound of snow crunching underfoot. A beautiful play of neutral tones to fit any space.

Long Autumnal Walk. This painting is based on a collage made up of my own photos from around Nova Scotia. A Lunenburg house is given a red roof and set in a large coastal grassland. A path meanders through the golden autumn grasses as they catch the light and breeze. Two people walk along the coastline toward a beach while murmurations of birds swoop overhead in ever-shifting patterns of silent movement.

Beach Roses. This painting is based on a collage made up of my own photos from around Nova Scotia. This old house was scene from a winding coastal road, surrounded by rambling wild roses. Here, it has been moved to have a better view out over the ocean, surrounded by rippling dune grasses and a lovely sand beach. These collaged scenes are filled with objects and settings that are emblematic of Nova Scotia, combined into an evocatively imagined setting.

Fall Garden Centrepiece (Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia). The garden next to this old house in Annapolis Royal was filled with fall seedheads and crunchy fallen leaves.
