THE
SONGS OF GRASSES
COLLECTION
Coastal Symphonies
I often find myself walking or driving along the winding coastline – past homesteads, fields, marshes, and grasslands… This series of original paintings is inspired by the astonishingly varied palette of colours that can be seen in coastal grasses. Their colours shift dramatically over the course of a day, and year.
Grasses are featured in each painting in this collection. Sometimes they play just one note and, other times, they orchestrate the entire scene with their shape, movement, and colour.
This series is composed of colour harmonies that capture an evocative, poetic, and slightly dreamlike view of Nova Scotia’s homes and coastal landscape. Colours are expanded to capture the felt experience of that moment or place.
I was often drawn to a vertical format for the way it guides the eye through successive bands of texture and colour as the grasses recede toward the horizon.
The music – the song – begins to form when individual paintings are placed next to each other. The distinct colours of each piece plays a different note and, together, they form a symphony of grass song.
Can you hear it?

From my studio to your home…
Inspiration for this collection was gathered on walks near my home on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
Each piece in this collection was crafted carefully by hand in my studio. Paintings are acrylic on watercolour paper, mounted to cradled wood panel. The clear-finished wood sides are left visible, creating a beautiful material contrast with the painting itself. They are sealed and finished with two coats of a gorgeous ultra-mat varnish and will hang flush to the wall by a concealed wire.
Paintings can be displayed together in a series, given a special spot individually, or grouped with other pieces in your collection. Elegantly and simply finished on cradled panel, they are ready to hang as‑is – or they can be framed in a floater frame for an elevated look.
All materials are archival quality and chosen to bring a lifetime of joy!

About the collection
The Songs of Grasses Collection is a series of twenty-two original paintings inspired by the astonishingly varied palette of colours that can be seen in coastal grasses. This series portrays the shapeshifting nature of grasses at different times of day and year – as a major or minor player within each scene. The collection plays with harmonies of colour to capture an evocative and poetic view of Nova Scotia’s homes and coastal landscape.
